Key Takeaways

  • The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends a deep (restorative) cleaning every 12 to 18 months for typical homes, with weekly vacuuming at minimum.
  • Carpet warranties often depend on it: Mohawk's EverStrand warranty requires at least one professional cleaning every 18 months with proof, and Shaw requires proof of periodic hot water extraction.
  • Pets, small kids and allergies shorten the schedule. Busy commercial areas need extraction 2 to 4 times a year, and severe-climate entrances monthly (Shaw Contract).
  • Daycares follow a stricter standard: monthly in infant and toddler rooms, every 3 months elsewhere (Caring for Our Children).

Most homes should have carpet professionally deep cleaned every 12 to 18 months, which is the Carpet and Rug Institute's recommendation. Homes with pets, young kids or allergies do better on a 6 to 12 month schedule. Businesses clean by traffic: quiet offices once a year, busy entrances and hallways about quarterly. Vacuuming happens weekly at minimum, and daily in high-traffic areas.

We clean carpet in homes, offices, churches and daycares across Trumbull and Mahoning County, and "how often?" comes up on almost every call. Below are the schedules the carpet industry and health standards actually publish, a simple table by home and building type, and what Northeast Ohio winters do to all of it. If you already know it's time, see our home carpet cleaning or commercial carpet cleaning pages.

How Often Does the Carpet and Rug Institute Say to Clean Carpet?

The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), the national trade association for carpet makers, recommends that carpet be cleaned with a restorative cleaning method every 12 to 18 months. Its Carpet and Rug Care Guide calls vacuuming the most important regular task, but says restorative cleaning must still be done to remove stubborn, embedded soil.

Why both? Carpet fibers are designed to hide soil and reflect light, the CRI guide explains, so dirt in carpet is far less visible than dirt on a hard floor. A carpet can look fine while grit sits down in the pile, grinding against the fibers every time someone walks across it. The guide warns that soil can damage the fibers permanently if it's allowed to stay.

The CRI also says professional cleaning should be considered before carpet starts to show heavy soiling. Waiting until the traffic lanes turn gray means you're cleaning carpet that has already been worn down.

What Do Carpet Warranties Require?

Many residential carpet warranties require professional cleaning on a schedule, and you need the receipt. Mohawk's EverStrand warranty and care guide requires a minimum of one professional cleaning every 18 months using products, equipment or systems with the CRI Seal of Approval, and a bill, invoice or statement serves as proof.

Shaw sets a similar condition. Shaw's carpet cleaning page states that "Shaw warranties require that the homeowner be able to show proof of periodic cleaning by hot water extraction," and says carpet in a typical household should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months. Shaw's main care page goes further, suggesting a professional hot water extraction anywhere from 6 to 18 months depending on traffic.

Here's what we tell homeowners with newer carpet: find the warranty paperwork, check the exact interval for your style, and keep every cleaning invoice in the same folder. When a stain or texture claim comes up years later, the first thing the manufacturer asks for is proof of cleaning. A folder of dated invoices is the difference between a claim and a denial.

How Often Should Carpet Be Cleaned in Homes and Businesses?

For homes, start from the CRI's 12 to 18 months and shorten it for pets, kids and allergies. For businesses, Shaw Contract's commercial maintenance chart sets hot water extraction by traffic: once a year for light traffic, twice for moderate, four times for heavy and monthly for extra heavy areas. This table puts both side by side.

Home or buildingDeep cleaning (hot water extraction)Vacuuming
Home, no pets, adults onlyEvery 12 to 18 months (CRI)Weekly, traffic lanes more often
Home with petsEvery 6 to 12 months2 or more times a week
Home with young kidsEvery 6 to 12 months, plus spot care as needed2 or more times a week
Home with allergies or asthmaEvery 6 to 12 monthsWeekly at minimum with a HEPA vacuum (EPA)
Office, private offices and cubiclesOnce a year (Shaw Contract, light traffic)2 or more times a week
Office halls, conference and break rooms2 to 4 times a year (Shaw Contract)Daily
ChurchSanctuary and classrooms twice a year; entrances and fellowship hall 4 times a yearWeekly, entrances after every service
DaycareMonthly in infant and toddler rooms, every 3 months elsewhere (Caring for Our Children)Daily
Medical officeWaiting areas and patient rooms 4 times a year (Shaw Contract, heavy traffic)Daily
Retail store4 times a year; entrances monthly in winter (Shaw Contract, severe climates)Daily

The pet, kid, allergy and church rows are our recommendations, built from the published ranges above and what we see when we pull water out of these carpets. Shaw Contract notes its chart is a general guideline to be adjusted to each facility, and we treat our schedule the same way.

How Often Should You Clean Carpet With Pets or Kids?

Homes with pets or young kids should plan on a professional deep clean every 6 to 12 months. That lines up with the short end of Shaw's 6 to 18 month range for heavier traffic. The CRI care guide adds that pet owners may need to vacuum more often than the weekly minimum it recommends for every home.

Pets add hair, dander, tracked-in dirt and accidents. Kids add spills, crumbs and a lot of time spent on the floor. Neither shows up as a single big stain. It shows up as a carpet that gets dingy faster and smells stale sooner.

With pets, the spot you can see is rarely the whole problem. A urine accident soaks through the carpet into the pad, so the stain on top may be the size of a plate while the damp area underneath is much wider. Surface cleaning can make it look gone for a week. Getting it out for good takes extraction, and sometimes treatment of the pad, which is why pet homes do better on a shorter schedule. Couches take the same beating, so many pet owners pair carpet with upholstery cleaning on the same visit.

Does Carpet Cleaning Help With Allergies?

Regular vacuuming and deep cleaning reduce the dust that collects in carpet. The EPA's asthma trigger guidance tells families dealing with dust mites to vacuum carpets and furniture every week and to use a vacuum with a HEPA filter on carpet and fabric furniture to reduce dust build-up.

The CRI care guide makes a related point: dirt and dust should be removed, not just moved around or thrown back into the breathing zone. A weak vacuum or a worn bag can blow fine dust back into the room. For allergy households, we suggest a HEPA vacuum weekly, a professional extraction every 6 to 12 months and, per the EPA, vacuuming when the person with asthma is out of the room.

How Often Should Offices, Churches and Daycares Clean Carpet?

Commercial carpet is cleaned by traffic, not by the calendar alone. Shaw Contract's chart calls for hot water extraction once a year in private offices, twice a year in shared offices and conference rooms, four times a year in main hallways, break rooms and waiting areas, and monthly in cafeterias and severe-climate entrances.

Daycares follow a health standard rather than a wear schedule. Caring for Our Children, the national early care and education standards from the American Academy of Pediatrics, calls for vacuuming carpet daily and cleaning it monthly in infant and toddler rooms and every 3 months in other areas, with cleaning done when children are gone. That's the schedule we follow on our daycare cleaning accounts.

Churches sit in between. The sanctuary may only see heavy use a few times a week, while the entrance, fellowship hall and nursery work much harder. We split the building into zones so the busy areas get cleaned more often without paying to extract a sanctuary that doesn't need it yet. See our church cleaning page for how that fits with regular janitorial work.

How Do Ohio Winters Change the Schedule?

Winter is the hardest season on carpet in the Mahoning Valley. Rock salt, ice melt, slush and mud get tracked in every day all winter. Shaw Contract rates entrances in severe climates as extra heavy traffic, calling for weekly interim cleaning and monthly hot water extraction, the most aggressive level on its chart.

What we see every spring: a white, chalky haze in the first few steps inside the door, and traffic lanes that feel stiff or crunchy underfoot. That's dried salt and grit sitting in the pile. It won't vacuum out on its own, and it keeps pulling moisture and dirt back into the fibers. For homes, the best time for a deep clean is right after the last snow, usually late March or April. For businesses, we add an extra entrance extraction in mid-winter and a full clean when the season ends.

Mats help more than anything else. The CRI's advice is to stop dirt at the door with mats outside and in. Shake or vacuum them often in winter, because a mat that's already full of salt just spreads it farther into the building.

How Often Should You Vacuum Carpet?

The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends vacuuming daily in high-traffic areas, twice a week in medium-traffic areas and weekly in light-traffic areas, using attachments along the edges. Shaw Floors gives homeowners the same short version: vacuum traffic lanes daily and the whole carpet thoroughly every week.

  • Vacuum entries, hallways and stairs daily or every other day
  • Vacuum family rooms and pet areas at least twice a week
  • Vacuum bedrooms and guest rooms weekly, edges included
  • Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter if anyone in the home has allergies
  • Empty the bin or change the bag before it's full
  • Shake out or vacuum entry mats every time you vacuum in winter

Vacuuming is what keeps the deep cleaning schedule realistic. The CRI care guide says loose soil should be removed while it's still on the surface so it doesn't get ground into the fibers. Skip the vacuuming and no cleaning schedule will keep traffic lanes from wearing out early.

What Should You Do About Spots Between Cleanings?

Act fast and blot, don't rub. Mohawk's EverStrand care guide warns that rubbing or scrubbing can fuzz the carpet, and says to test any cleaner on a hidden spot first. The CRI care guide says to rinse the area with cold water afterward and blot with a dry cloth until all of the cleaning solution is gone.

  • Scrape up solids and blot liquids with a white cloth or paper towel
  • Test your spot cleaner on a hidden area first
  • Apply a small amount and blot from the outside in, never scrub
  • Rinse with cold water and blot until no solution is left
  • Lay a half-inch stack of white paper towels on the spot and weigh it down overnight (CRI)
  • Call a pro for pet urine, large spills or anything that keeps coming back

That rinse step matters more than most people think. The CRI guide notes that some cleaning solutions cause rapid soiling if they aren't completely removed. Leftover soap is sticky, and it's the most common reason a spot comes back darker a week later. It's also why carpet can look dirtier after a cheap shampoo job that leaves residue behind.

When Should You Call a Pro Instead of Waiting?

Call for a professional cleaning when traffic lanes look gray, the carpet smells stale after vacuuming, spots keep coming back, or your warranty interval is coming due. Waiting for the 18-month mark makes sense for a quiet home. It doesn't make sense if the carpet already looks worn.

How often should carpet be professionally cleaned?

The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends a professional restorative cleaning every 12 to 18 months for typical homes. Homes with pets, young kids or allergies usually need it every 6 to 12 months. Commercial carpet is scheduled by traffic: Shaw Contract recommends hot water extraction once a year in light-traffic offices, two to four times a year in busy areas and monthly at severe-climate entrances.

Do I have to clean my carpet to keep the warranty?

Often, yes. Mohawk's EverStrand warranty requires at least one professional cleaning every 18 months using CRI Seal of Approval products or equipment, with a bill or invoice as proof. Shaw says its warranties require proof of periodic cleaning by hot water extraction. Check your own warranty for the exact interval and keep every cleaning receipt.

Can you clean carpet too often?

Not with proper hot water extraction that rinses well and leaves the carpet to dry fully. The real risk is leftover soap. The Carpet and Rug Institute notes that some cleaning solutions cause rapid soiling if they aren't completely removed, which makes carpet get dirty faster. Frequent cleaning is fine when the method rinses out the residue.

Why does my carpet look dirtier after cleaning?

Usually because cleaning solution was left in the fibers. The Carpet and Rug Institute says some solutions cause rapid soiling if they aren't completely removed, so the sticky residue grabs new dirt within days. Spots can also wick back up as deep moisture dries and pulls soil from the pad. A thorough rinse and strong extraction prevent both problems.

How often should a daycare clean its carpet?

Caring for Our Children, the national early care standards from the American Academy of Pediatrics, calls for vacuuming carpet daily and cleaning it monthly in infant and toddler rooms and every 3 months in other areas. Carpet should be cleaned when children are gone, and spots should be cleaned and disinfected right after any body fluid spill.

Is it worth cleaning old carpet?

Usually, if the carpet is still sound. Cleaning removes embedded soil, odors and allergens and can make an older carpet look much better for far less than replacement. If the fibers are worn down to the backing, the pad is soaked from years of pet accidents, or seams are coming apart, cleaning won't fix it, and replacement is the better spend.
