Junk removal costs a national average of $241 in 2026, and most people pay between $133 and $372, according to Angi's 2026 junk removal cost guide. A single bulky item can cost as little as $60 to $150. A full truckload of mixed junk runs $600 to $800. Volume, weight, stairs and local disposal fees decide where your job lands.
We clear basements, garages, rentals and estates across Trumbull and Mahoning County, and the first question on almost every call is "what is this going to run me?" Below are the current numbers from the three biggest cost guides, what each item type costs, what pushes a price up and the free disposal options Warren residents have. If you already know you want it gone, our junk removal and clean out service starts with photos or a free walk-through.
How Much Does Junk Removal Cost on Average?
Angi's 2026 guide, updated September 30, 2026, reports a national average of $241 with a typical range of $133 to $372. HomeGuide's 2026 price list puts the average at $210 and the typical range at $150 to $350. Thumbtack, updated October 13, 2026, reports a range of $138 to $308. All three land in the same zone.
| Source (2026) | Average | Typical range | Low to high |
|---|---|---|---|
| Angi | $241 | $133 to $372 | $60 to $150 single item; $600 to $800 full truck |
| HomeGuide | $210 | $150 to $350 | $70 to $570 |
| Thumbtack | Not listed | $138 to $308 | $80 to $599 |
Why do the numbers differ? Each guide pulls from its own pool of jobs. Angi bases its figure on 44,583 verified projects. HomeGuide also notes that a business clean out averages about $500, more than double the typical home job, because offices tend to have heavier furniture and more of it.
Angi also breaks out labor, which it puts at $100 to $300 per job and calls the largest share of any junk removal bill. That is useful to know. When you get a quote, you are mostly paying for the time it takes a crew to carry everything out, not just the truck space.
How Much Does Junk Removal Cost by Truckload?
Most haulers price by how much of the truck your junk fills. Angi's 2026 guide, using a 20-yard dump truck, lists $75 to $125 for an eighth of a load, $200 to $400 for half and $600 to $800 for a full truck. Many companies charge a minimum of about 2 cubic yards even for small jobs.
| Load size | Angi (20-yard truck) | HomeGuide |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum / 1/8 load | $75 to $125 (2 to 3 cu yd) | $70 to $100 (up to 60 cu ft) |
| 1/4 load | $125 to $200 (3 to 4.5 cu yd) | $100 to $150 (80 to 120 cu ft) |
| 1/2 load | $200 to $400 (4.5 to 11 cu yd) | $200 to $300 (180 to 240 cu ft) |
| 3/4 load | $400 to $600 (11 to 13 cu yd) | $300 to $380 (300 to 360 cu ft) |
| Full load | $600 to $800 (13 to 17 cu yd) | $400 to $450 (420 to 480 cu ft) |
The gap at the top comes from truck size. Angi's full load is 13 to 17 cubic yards. HomeGuide's full load is 420 to 480 cubic feet, which works out to roughly 16 to 18 cubic yards, but its prices come from a different set of companies. HomeGuide sums it up as about $1.50 per cubic foot.
Thumbtack measures in pickup trucks instead: $97 to $201 for half a pickup, $132 to $273 for one pickup and $377 to $779 for four or more. A pickup bed holds far less than a box truck, so compare those numbers to each other, not to Angi's.
Here is what we see on real jobs: people almost always guess their pile is bigger than it is. Broken-down boxes, bagged clothes and flat-packed furniture stack tight. A garage that looks like a full truck often fits in half once it is loaded well. Pull everything into one spot and take a photo from two angles, and any hauler can give you a much closer number.
What Does It Cost to Remove a Single Item?
Single-item pickups usually carry a minimum charge. Angi's 2026 guide puts most furniture-only jobs at a $75 to $150 minimum, then prices each extra piece by size and weight. A couch runs $100 to $200 and a mattress $75 to $150. Pianos are the outlier at $200 to $400.
| Item | Angi (2026) | HomeGuide (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Armchair | $50 to $100 | Not listed |
| Couch | $100 to $200 | $200 to $375 (3-piece sectional) |
| Mattress | $75 to $150 | $70 to $100 |
| Dining table | $100 to $200 | Not listed |
| Entertainment center | $100 to $300 | $100 to $250 (large) |
| Bookcase | $75 to $200 | Not listed |
| Carpet | $75 to $300 | Not listed |
| Piano | $200 to $400 | $50 to $100 surcharge on top of the load |
Thumbtack's 2026 data puts the average job for furniture, appliances and electronics at about $169. If you only have one or two pieces, that minimum is most of your bill. That is why it often pays to wait until you have a few things to go at once.
How Much Is Appliance Removal?
Appliance removal costs $50 to $400 per item, depending on the type, according to Angi's 2026 guide. A fridge runs $50 to $150, a washer $75 to $150 and a furnace or boiler $200 to $400. Fridges, freezers and AC units can cost more because the freon has to be handled properly.
| Appliance | Angi removal cost (2026) |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator | $50 to $150 |
| Freezer | $100 to $200 |
| Washing machine | $75 to $150 |
| Dryer | $80 to $200 |
| Dishwasher | $75 to $150 |
| Oven | $80 to $200 |
| Water heater | $90 to $200 |
| Window AC | $50 to $90 |
| Boiler / furnace | $200 to $400 |
HomeGuide's 2026 list shows how weight adds up. It puts a washer or dryer at $70 to $205 and adds a $35 to $60 surcharge for each refrigerator, freezer or AC unit. Angi notes the flip side: appliances with a lot of scrap metal can lower the price, since the metal has resale value.
What Changes the Price of Junk Removal?
Volume moves the price most, followed by weight, access and disposal fees. Angi's 2026 guide says difficult access, like stairs or tight hallways, pushes labor toward the top of its $100 to $300 range. Thumbtack's data shows it too: jobs with stairs averaged $197, compared with $188 for jobs without stairs.
| Factor | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Volume | The more of the truck you fill, the more you pay. This is the starting point of most quotes. |
| Weight | Concrete, dirt, shingles and appliances fill the weight limit before the space. HomeGuide notes that large items are surcharged for extra weight. |
| Stairs and access | Basements, upper floors and long carries take more time and often two people per item. |
| Disposal fees | Angi puts local disposal at $50 to $100 per ton. Most haulers fold that into the price, but ask. |
| Recycling and donation | Sorting items for recycling or charity adds stops. Angi lists tire recycling at $5 to $15 per tire. |
| Hazardous materials | Paint, chemicals and fuel need special handling. Angi puts hazardous disposal at $250 to $500 per ton. |
| Season | Angi notes spring and early summer remodeling season can push prices up a little. |
Access is the factor people forget. A pile of boxes at the garage door loads in minutes. The same pile spread across a basement with a narrow, turning staircase can take three times as long, and every trip up those stairs is labor. If you can stage items near a door before the crew arrives, you cut the hardest part of the job.
Where does it all go? Furniture is hard to recycle. The EPA reports that of about 12.1 million tons of furniture and furnishings thrown out in 2018, about 9.7 million tons went to landfills. That is why good crews pull out anything donatable before the truck heads to the dump.
Dumpster Rental vs Haul Away: Which Costs Less?
A dumpster usually costs less if you do the loading yourself. Angi's 2026 guide puts a one-week rental at around $380, including haul-away, permits and dump fees, and up to $800 for a large roll-off. Full-service junk removal costs more, but the crew does all the lifting and carrying for you.
| Dumpster rental | Junk removal (haul away) | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cost (Angi, 2026) | About $380 a week; $75 to $200 for 2 cu yd up to $350 to $800 for 40 cu yd | $241 average; $600 to $800 for a full truck |
| Who loads it | You | The crew |
| How long | Usually a week, some companies offer 1 to 2 days | Usually done in one visit |
| Permits | $10 to $100 a week if it sits on the street | None |
| Best for | Remodels, roofing and slow multi-week projects | Furniture, appliances, basements and estates where heavy carrying is the hard part |
A dumpster also has rules. Angi points out that most come with weight limits and extra fees for going over them, and hazardous items cannot go in. If your project is mostly heavy furniture coming up from a basement, a dumpster in the driveway does not solve the carrying problem.
Free Disposal Options in Trumbull County
Before you pay anyone to take an old fridge or TV, check the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District. Its Trumbull County Collection Facility at 5138 Enterprise Dr. NW in Warren takes appliances and electronics from Trumbull and Geauga County residents free of charge. It is open year-round on Wednesdays, 10am to 3pm, except government holidays, and staff unload your vehicle.
- Free: refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers
- Free: washers, dryers, water heaters, stoves, ovens, microwaves and furnaces
- Free: computers, monitors, printers, TVs (limit 3 a day) and most things that plug in
- Seasonal: household hazardous waste like paint, chemicals and gasoline, May through October
- Not taken: old tires. The district points residents to community tire collections and local tire dealers
- Questions: call the district at 330-675-2673
That works well if you have a truck and a free Wednesday. If you do not, or the fridge is in a basement, that is where paying for haul away makes sense. Either way, appliances and electronics should never go to the curb with regular trash.
How to Get an Accurate Junk Removal Quote
HomeGuide's 2026 guide recommends asking for an upfront price and confirming it includes pickup, loading, taxes, dump fees and mileage. That one step heads off most surprise charges. Here is what to have ready and what to ask:
- Photos of everything, from two angles, with something for scale
- A rough count of large items like couches, mattresses and appliances
- Where the items are: ground floor, basement, attic or upstairs
- Anything heavy like concrete, dirt, tile or shingles
- Is the price flat for the job, or by volume once they see the load?
- Are disposal, recycling and dump fees included?
- Are there surcharges for appliances, stairs or hazardous items?
- Will they donate usable items, and will they sweep up when they are done?
- Are they insured?
Junk Removal Before a Move-Out or Estate Sale
Junk removal is often step one of a bigger job. Angi's 2026 guide notes that when a house is fully emptied, you will likely need a deep clean once the junk is gone, and it suggests budgeting for both up front. That is true for rentals between tenants and for a family clearing a parent's house.
If you are handling a loved one's home, our estate cleanout checklist walks through what to sort, save and donate first, and our estate cleanout service handles it with the family's pace in mind. Moving out of a rental? Clear the junk first, then work through our move-out cleaning checklist or book move-out cleaning so you get your deposit back.
Most haulers stop when the last item is on the truck. What is left behind is a room of dust, cobwebs, stuck-on grime and marks where furniture sat for years. If you are going to list, rent or show the space, plan for that cleanup. Booking haul away and cleaning with one crew means one schedule and one person to call.
